Yes, Covid-19 turned us all more towards digital outlets. Most of us watch more online. Most of us shop more online. Most of us troll more online. Most of us learn more online. Especially our children are bound in front of the screen for learning, for gaming, for watching, and much more…
Is this our new normal? We don’t think so. And we don’t hope so.
As you have read our previous articles, we call the upcoming period “The Better Normal”. And that has a reason. If we don’t aim for the better, the future will not happen by itself, and will not evolve for the better. So we need to ensure that, and need to nudge the happenings, so the outcome will be a “Better Normal”.
We hear a lot of wise people these days getting fanatic about “digital” and “digital transformation” and their understanding of the “new normal”, which will be completely different from the past. “We will not turn back to the old days!”, they say. How come? What are they going to do? Close down all factories. Don’t live in the same flat or house. Everybody switches to small e-cars or even e-bikes. Everybody will continue to socially distance and not touch anybody. Not going to sports games, not going to the cinema, not going out for dinner, not going to the beach, to the gym, to any place where you will or have to touch other people. There were people who paid to be able to touch or be touched by other people. How you can imagine that all of this will disappear?
So, the “Better Normal” is not radically different from yesterday, but it’s a better version or the past, more consciously designed, more sustainable, and just more humane.
We are social beings
Not everything is suitable to be digitally transformed. We are social beings. Yes, there is a lot you can digitize and digitalize in education. But the social contacts to your friends, to your teachers, the discipline to get up early and behave in an acceptable manner, is something quite valuable, quite essential and quite humane. We must not educate “another brick in the wall”, but we can personalize learning journeys for each child or student. We can take away a lot of low value tasks from the teacher and the principals, but let’s keep the schools in place and let’s make them more social, more engaging, just more fun.
The same is true for any business. We have created this civilization, with its cities, its museums, its airports, its factories, its distribution centers, its highways, its sport yards, its casinos, its anything. This is the world we live in. Yes, we have some issues. Yes, digital can help and has to help. And exactly this is the way we have to put digital to play. Digital transformation is not the means. It’s the end to a means, to a very important means. It’s about saving the world; it’s about saving humanity.
We have to use digital to streamline value chains, integrate supply chains, optimize production and distribution, improve the customer experience, provide new channels and business models for convenience, develop products which are sustainable, define industry standards and obey them, which are more humane, and just be more just.
