Despite being one of the youngest topics in management thinking, Employee Engagement has already succeeded to get into the agenda of executive board meetings due to its proven importance for an organization’s short-term performance and long-term survival.
Today, we are well aware of the fact that an employee has a direct impact on the productivity and creativity of his organization depending on where his employment journey lies on the satisfaction scale. An engaged employee would naturally desire to utilize his experience and skills not only to perform but also to improve his daily work. And it would not be a big surprise if such a driven employee were to inspire a colleague sitting in the next room and/or on the upper floor with his ideas and enthusiasm. Maybe even, as the butterfly effect theory suggests, the trust and transparency between a few highly motivated employees could lead to a more agile and stronger cross functional collaboration across the entire organization.
Motivation… Are you joking?
Speaking about motivation, one can not stop wondering what it would take to build an army of engaged employees when Digitalization has been shaking almost all sectors and organizational roles in order to build more standardization, more simplification and globalization. Does it not feel like, day by day, employers are getting more alienated from their employees even though they keep on introducing attractive bonus schemes, flexible working hours, informal dressing codes to shield their workforce against the negative thinking fueled by the non-stop discussions on how to outsource more or become artificially intelligent to get better than the competitors.
As Daniel Pink explains in his book Drive, we, humans, are not always motivated by the financial incentives aim at rewarding high performers. On contrary, we are natural born ‘purpose maximizers’ and in any role, we have in life, either as a father, an Exec Man/employee or a customer, we look for a clear sense of purpose in our actions. Which means, we critically think about what and why we do something and once interested in and trust the envisioned future, we get intrinsically motived and do our utmost best to deliver a good job and help others as it directly leads to personal satisfaction. However, in the Digital Era, due to continuously shifting company priorities and ever stopping change initiatives, neither employees can stay on top of the ‘latest purpose’ and assess ‘what is in it for them’, nor managers can find quality time to communicate this to their employees and listen them to understand what keeps them going or gives them nightmares before they step in the office every morning.
Yet Let’s Get Digital
And surprisingly here the so-called enemy a.k.a. Digitalization is our salvation in helping us to structure and execute an efficient employee engagement strategy which is based on an instant and transparent two-way dialogue between all members of the organization. Let’s not forget Customer Experience matters and our employees are also customers of a ‘favorite’ brand or a ‘best in class’ service provider. Therefore, they know how to utilize Digitalization to get the most out of any interaction they pursue in their daily life and naturally expect the same level of genuine and attention when they engage with their employer.
We may neither change the macro trends nor our competitors. However, it is up to us to decide how to treat our employees. If we want to build a trusted and exciting workplace for our workforce, which will with no doubt lead to increased productivity and innovativeness for our organization, it is essential to have a proactive and good structured employee engagement strategy.
