When we talk about transformation, we mean true transformation. And this implies that many difficult decisions will be taken, many traditional flows and habits will be thrown away, organizational siloes will be broken, and a lot of comfort zones have to be left behind.
Who better than top management to execute decisions of this magnitude? Are they on board? Have they truly understood the importance and urgency of this transformation? Have they formed a coalition? John Kotter calls this “the sense of urgency” and “the guiding coalition”. They must create and deploy a “shared vision”. This will enable true change, and lead to true transformation. Leadership must guide from the front and own the change.
Sometimes executives incline towards shortcuts. If the circumstances are not mature, there are no shortcuts. Some executives incline towards low (or no) resistance tracks. But the resistance will come later, and in most cases, it’s too late.
Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Know your maturity, your awareness and your readiness. You should talk to people who have “been there” and “done that”. Becoming a world champion is a team decision, a team spirit and a huge amount of mental and physical team effort. Transformation is difficult, don’t make it even more difficult by forgetting the basics.

New Eras Require New Mindsets
One miraculous word in this context is “culture”. Culture will eat your strategy for breakfast. Digital transformation is just a side dish. The current culture, the hard-wired mindsets, well-settled habits, deep-rooted behavior, is so strong, so hard to change, and unfortunately often neglected.
The contrary is possible. If you seed the idea of change in the hearts and heads of your people, amazing things will happen. If you allow, enable and foster new behavior, new mindset, new discourses, change will emerge and evolve. Soon walls will fall apart, dogmas will break, and a lot of suffering will disappear.
Change is possible. You have to be the change you want to see. Talk to people. Take them seriously. Once you listen to them, trust them, care about them, they will respond, they will open up and come to you. Tomorrow will be much better than today. Make it happen.
All investments in this subject matter will have a huge pay off. Not everything goes on the balance sheet. But there are very valuable things in life you can’t always put a number to. This is proven best practice. Don’t forget it. Don’t disregard it. You know it, and we know it, so do it.
