The Date We Started Taking More Than We Give To Our Planet Earth: Overshoot Day

It's July 28, 2022: Earth overshoot day. Today is the date we should stop consuming, eating, driving, sending e-mails or watching Youtube videos since we have used all the biological resources that Earth generates for us this year. As of today, we are taking more than we should from the planet Earth. Can we course-correct our unsustainable path?

Can We Course Correct Our Unsustainable Path?

As we approach 2030 and with less than ten years to achieve the Global Goals set out by governments with businesses and other stakeholders, it is clear that we are not on track. Each year, the date is moving literally for us to awaken to the reality of our mounting problems.

Climate change, growing inequality, and widespread social injustice are all reaching a tipping point. In order to address these issues, corporations must become more sustainable enterprises; however, before any business can start changing the world, it must first undergo an internal transformation.

If this process is to be meaningful, it must do more than alter a few business strategies; it needs to change the shared values of all stakeholders, effecting deep change at the cultural level.

This is new territory.

Moving business to a sustainable growth model will be disruptive, with big risks as well as opportunities at stake. It will involve experimenting with new “circular” and more agile business models and digital platforms that can grow exponentially to shape new social and environmental value chains.

Knowing how to move first and fast is critical; so is reducing exposure to the risk of assets being stranded by the shift to low-carbon, more automated economies.

Against that backdrop of extreme volatility and system’s change, business world is going through two major transformations – Digital & Sustainability. Both are vital to organisations’ survival as well as creating prosperity for all the stakeholders in our social and economic ecosystems.

The journey of sustainable development is not an easy one; it necessitates endurance and courage, transparency and humility, a holistic approach and the engagement of all stakeholders.

One of the key factors of success is an integrated sustainable and digital approach based on collaboration across all levels in line with the business strategy.

This is why we exist.
